iPhone Calls Go Straight to Voicemail? Check Call Screening First
If calls from numbers you have not saved go straight to voicemail without
ringing, open Settings > Apps > Phone > Screen Unknown Callers and select
Never, then try the call again. If saved contacts are affected too, check
Focus, Blocked Contacts, Call Forwarding, and your carrier instead. Separating
unknown callers, one contact, second calls, and all calls prevents a broad reset
from hiding the real cause.
This guide was checked against Apple’s English documentation on August 31,
2026. Apple’s update page listed iOS 26.6.1 as the current
version, and iOS 26 supports
iPhone 11 and later plus iPhone SE models from the second and third
generations.
Apple’s feature-availability page
lists Call Screening for several English locales as well as Korean in South
Korea. Availability, wording, and menus can
still vary by country, language, carrier, and line. Older iOS versions may use
different menu paths, and carrier-dependent options such as Wi-Fi Calling or
Call Forwarding may not appear on every line.
First, identify which calls skip the ring

| What you observe | Check first | What it usually means |
|---|---|---|
| Only unsaved numbers go straight to voicemail | Screen Unknown Callers | Silence prevents unsaved callers from ringing and sends them to voicemail |
| Only carrier-identified spam is affected | Call Filtering and Spam | Your carrier may silence calls it identifies as spam or fraud |
| Only one person’s calls are affected | Blocked Contacts | The number may be blocked, or the person may be calling from a different number |
| Calls fail only while a Focus is active | Control Center and Focus | Do Not Disturb, Sleep, or Work can silence incoming calls |
| Only a second incoming call is affected | Call Waiting | With Call Waiting off, a new call can go directly to voicemail while you are already on a call |
| Every number fails and outgoing calls fail too | Line and carrier status | An account restriction, outage, SIM or eSIM issue, or network problem is more likely |
If the incoming-call screen appears but the ringtone is merely silent, this is
a different symptom. Check Silent mode and the Ringtone and Alerts level in
Settings > Sounds & Haptics. If the caller hears voicemail almost immediately
and your iPhone never shows an incoming-call screen, continue with the routing
checks below.
Turn off call screening and Focus for one controlled check
- Open Control Center. If
Do Not Disturb,Sleep,Work, or another Focus is
highlighted, turn it off temporarily. - Go to
Settings > Apps > Phone > Screen Unknown Callersand selectNever. - In the same Phone settings, review
Call Filtering > Unknown Callersand
Spam. Disable a filter only long enough to isolate the cause, then restore
the protection you want. - Open
Blocked Contactsand check whether the affected number was added by
mistake. - From a trusted second phone, place one call from a saved number and one from
an unsaved number. Note whether the iPhone rings, shows the incoming-call
screen, and records a missed call. Do not use an emergency, medical, work, or
other time-sensitive number for this check.
Apple’s current troubleshooting page
uses the same diagnostic order: Focus, Screen Unknown Callers, Call Filtering,
and Blocked Contacts. Changing one group at a time makes the result more useful
than resetting network settings before you know whether the problem affects
saved contacts.

If only unknown numbers are affected, separate screening from filtering
Apple lists three choices under Screen Unknown
Callers:
Never: Unsaved callers ring normally.Ask Reason for Calling: The iPhone asks the caller for a name and reason
before your phone rings.Silence: Unsaved calls are silenced and sent to voicemail.
Call Filtering > Unknown Callers serves a different purpose: it moves missed
calls and voicemail from unknown numbers into a separate list. The Spam
filter can silence calls that your carrier identifies as spam or fraud and send
them to voicemail. If switching Screen Unknown Callers to Never does not make
a particular business or institution visible, check the filtered Unknown
Callers and Spam lists in the Phone app as well.
After confirming a legitimate hospital, school, delivery service, or other
important caller, saving the number can prevent future screening. For diagnosis,
however, first use one trusted unsaved number so you can tell whether screening
was the cause.
If saved contacts are affected, check blocking and Focus
When only one person is affected, open Settings > Apps > Phone > Blocked. Compare the number in Recents with the saved contact because a person
Contacts
may call from a mobile number, office switchboard, or international format that
does not match the entry you expected. To unblock a number, swipe left on it and
tap Unblock.
If several saved contacts fail at the same time of day, turn off the active
Focus in Control Center and try again. If you need to keep that Focus, review
its allowed people only after confirming it caused the symptom. A scheduled
Sleep or Work Focus can reactivate later, so record which Focus was active at
the time the call was missed.
Check Call Forwarding and Call Waiting on the affected line
If every incoming call is diverted, open Settings > Apps > Phone > Call. Apple’s Call Forwarding guide
Forwarding
explains that a Call Forwarding icon appears in the status bar while forwarding
is on. On a Dual SIM iPhone, select the affected line. If the menu is missing or
you use conditional forwarding, ask your carrier to confirm the line’s settings.
If only a second call goes to voicemail while you are already on a call, open
Settings > Apps > Phone > Call Waiting. Apple states in its Call Waiting
guide that incoming
calls go directly to voicemail when Call Waiting is off and the line is busy.
Dual SIM behavior can depend on which line is active and whether Wi-Fi Calling
is available, so check the exact line on which the symptom occurred.

If every call fails, separate carrier and network problems
If calls from saved and unsaved numbers both fail and you cannot place outgoing
calls, the Phone app settings are less likely to be the only cause. Following
Apple’s call-failure checklist, ask
your carrier to confirm:
- the account is active and correctly provisioned;
- there is no local service outage;
- billing or account restrictions are not blocking calls; and
- the carrier system does not show an error for your calls.
If the status bar says No Service or SOS, stop repeating the screening
steps. Use the iPhone No Service or SOS
checklist
to separate coverage, carrier settings, and SIM or eSIM problems. That English
ToolSolve page was confirmed live on August 31, 2026. Do not start with Reset
Network Settings: it removes saved Wi-Fi networks and passwords as well as
cellular, VPN, and APN settings.
Frequently asked questions
Does Silent mode send calls straight to voicemail?
Silent mode can stop you from hearing the ringtone, but an immediate transfer
to voicemail can also involve call screening, Focus, blocking, forwarding, or
the line itself. First check whether the incoming-call screen appeared and
whether the Phone app recorded a missed call.
Why does only the second call go to voicemail while I am on a call?
Call Waiting may be off. On a Dual SIM iPhone, also record which line was in use
and which line received the second call before changing settings.
What to do next
When only unsaved callers go straight to voicemail, set Screen Unknown Callers
to Never first. If saved contacts are affected, check Focus and Blocked
Contacts; if it happens only during another call, check Call Waiting. When all
incoming and outgoing calls fail, move to Call Forwarding, carrier status, and
the linked No Service or SOS checklist. Keep a one-line result for the saved and
unsaved test calls so Apple Support or your carrier can see which path failed.
