ChatGPT File Upload Limit Reached? Check Storage Before You Wait

If ChatGPT says upload limit reached, stop retrying the same file.
Failed attempts can sometimes count toward the upload-rate cap. Record the
error time and account first, then check OpenAI Status and Settings > Storage.
If storage is available and the file is within the published size limits, the
right next step is usually to wait for the rolling upload limit to reset.

This guide uses OpenAI’s English-language Help Center as checked on July 29,
2026. Upload caps and Library availability can change by plan and operating
conditions, so use the message and storage details shown in your own account
instead of relying only on a static number.

Record the error and check storage first

OpenAI’s
File Uploads FAQ
separates a rolling upload rate from a shared storage cap. An individual
file can also fail because of its size, token count, or format.

Record these four details before changing anything:

  1. The complete error message, timestamp, and time zone
  2. Whether you used the web app, iOS app, or Android app
  3. The signed-in account and displayed subscription plan
  4. Used and remaining capacity under Settings > Storage

Check OpenAI Status to see whether ChatGPT has a
known incident. If it does, wait for recovery before deleting files or changing
plans. A green status page is not conclusive for every account or feature, so
continue with the checks below if the error persists.

Separate the rolling rate, storage, and file limits

Decision flow separating ChatGPT upload-rate, storage, and per-file limits

Several causes can produce a similar-looking error. Do not delete files and
change your plan at the same time. Start with the row that best matches what
you can observe.

What you observe Most likely category First action
The error began after several uploads in a short period Rolling upload-rate cap Stop additional attempts, wait, and later test once with a small non-sensitive file
You uploaded little or nothing today Failed attempts, wrong account, service incident, or storage cap Check the account and plan, OpenAI Status, and Settings > Storage
Storage is full or over its limit Library storage cap Confirm local copies, then delete only files you no longer need from Library
One file fails but a smaller file uploads Per-file size, token, or format restriction Check that file’s format and size, then split only the material you need
Uploads work in a regular chat but not one Project Per-Project file cap Review Project sources and remove only confirmed duplicates or obsolete files
File and image tools pause on a Free account Separate Free-tier tool limit Follow the in-product notice and wait for the tool limit to reset

As of the verification date, the FAQ gives an upper example of 80 uploads per
three hours and three file uploads per day for Free users. OpenAI also says it
may lower limits during peak hours. ChatGPT does not currently show how much
of the rolling file-upload quota you have used or how much remains. Uploading
fewer than 80 files therefore does not prove that the current rate cap was not
reached.

If storage is full, review Library instead of deleting chats

OpenAI’s
File storage and Library in ChatGPT
states that uploaded and generated files are saved to Library. Deleting a chat
containing a file does not delete the copy saved in Library, so clearing the
chat list alone may not address a Library storage limit.

  1. Open Settings > Storage and note total usage and remaining capacity.
  2. Open Library from the left-hand sidebar.
  3. Before deleting anything, confirm that the original exists locally or in an
    approved storage location.
  4. Select one file you know you will not need again and choose Delete.
  5. If Recently deleted is available and permanent removal is appropriate,
recheck that file and choose Delete forever.
  6. Return to Storage and check whether the displayed usage changed.

Deleting a file can be difficult or impossible to undo after permanent
removal. Verify a separate copy before deleting work documents, contracts,
assignments, original photos, or anything else you cannot replace. If the
storage figure does not change, do not keep deleting more files; refresh the
view and contact support if necessary.

When OpenAI’s two storage descriptions do not match

As of July 29, 2026, the File Uploads FAQ describes shared user and
organization storage caps, while the more recently updated Library article
lists separate Library capacities for Free, Go, Plus, Pro, and Business plans.
The two pages do not clearly explain whether those figures describe the same
storage pool in different ways.

Do not calculate a target and mass-delete files based on one number. Use the
usage and over-limit state displayed under Settings > Storage for the
current account
. Until the documentation is reconciled, the published
figures alone are not enough to conclude that a plan upgrade is required.

If only one file fails, check its size and type

An upload can fail even when the rolling rate and storage both have room.
OpenAI listed these per-file restrictions on the verification date:

File category Published restriction
Any file Up to 512 MB per file
Text and document files Up to 2 million tokens per file
CSV and spreadsheets Approximately 50 MB, depending on row size
Images Up to 20 MB per image

If you must split a large document, copy only the pages or sheets required for
the task. Do not paste a document password into a chat, and do not use a work
file for testing when organizational policy prohibits uploading it to an
external service.

If only one Project is blocked, check its source count

If a file attaches in a regular conversation but not in one Project, review
that Project’s sources. On the verification date, the File Uploads FAQ listed
up to 20 files per Project for Plus and up to 40 for Pro, Team, Education, and
Business.

Do not immediately remove older-looking sources:

  1. Check for duplicate names and versions in the Project file list.
  2. Identify the latest source the current conversations still need.
  3. Remove one obsolete file only if a local copy exists.
  4. Try adding the new file once.

Consider a plan change only after confirming that the Project file cap is the
actual cause and that no existing source can be safely removed.

What to send support if uploads still fail

If OpenAI Status shows no incident, Storage has room, the file is within the
published restrictions, and one small file still fails after a reasonable
wait, contact OpenAI through the Help Center support chat. Prepare:

  • A privacy-redacted screenshot of the complete error
  • The timestamp and time zone
  • Web, iOS, or Android, plus the app or browser version
  • The account email address and subscription plan
  • The request ID, if one appears
  • The file type and size, without sending its private contents unnecessarily

Share an account email or request ID only through the official support channel,
not in a public post or reusable blog screenshot.

Summary

Upload limit reached does not always mean you uploaded too many files. Stop
retrying, check OpenAI Status and Settings > Storage, and separate a rolling
rate limit from Library capacity, a Project cap, and a per-file restriction.
Delete one verified unneeded file only when Storage is the confirmed cause.
Otherwise, wait and test once with a small non-sensitive file.
